Concrete Non-Destructive Testing Products

PCTE Products

Here at PCTE we supply a large range of proven technical products that have been used and demonstrated to be effective in their respective applications. The products are broken down into the following catagories:-

Quality & Strength

The principle properties of concrete important for structural and durability assessments are compressive strength and penetrability. Compressive strength measurement of cores gives an indirect assessment of quality, abrasion resistance, tensile strength, and E-modulus. However as surface properties may not be reflected by the properties of the bulk concrete as measured by cores surface measurement by NDT are extremely valuable. These NDT measurements are also important to give more global understanding of concrete performance. Calibration with cores is generally useful.

Schmidt Hammer - Measurement of concrete surface strength by rebound

DYNA Pull off Tester - Direct pull off test for bond strength of repairs, carbon fibre, veneers, screeds and toppings

Pundit Ultrasonic Tester - Measures sound wave velocity in concrete. Can indicate defects or measure concrete strength.

Resonance Modulus Tester- Non-destructive acoustic technique for determining the modulus of concrete and rock samples.

Surfer Ultrasonic Pulse Velocity Tester- This device is a quick method of determining the compression wave velocity of many hard materials

Chaplin (BCA) Abrasion Tester - Abrasion of surface by wear

TORRENT Permeability - Penetrability by unidirectional air flow using a surface vacuum box. Requires Resi measurement.

Concrete Geometry

Very often it is important to know the hidden dimensions of concrete and the location and size of embedments (reinforcing, prestressing tendons, ducts and electrical cables). With a covermeter, ground penetrating radar and impact echo there is little that can not be determined about a structure.

ProfoScope Rebar Locator - Cordless rebar locator gives position, depth and size of bars. No datalogging.

Profometer Covermeter - Pulse induction method to give cover and bar size for reinforcing

Concrete Thickness Gauge - Impact echo device to give element thickness or defect location

Ground Penetrating Radar
-  GPRs system for imaging of rebar, post-tensioing, services, defects and moisture in concrete

IBIS-S Interferometric Radar - Used to measure displacement and vibration of structures without any contact

Parallel Seismic - Measure the length of buried piles, even if you don't have access to the top

Ultra-Seismic - Measure the length of buried structures, including piles and abutments, even where access is limited.

Concrete Defect Location Testing

Even the best laid plans can go wrong. Defects in structure can lay hidden inside structures whether they are caused by concrete placement or design issues or from deterioration of a structure over time. Voids, honeycombing, cracking, and delamination of concrete can occur in any structure. Take a look at these advanced NDT techniques for finding defects in concrete.

Impact Echo
- A system that can be used for finding defects in concrete due to structural damage or poor concrete placement.

Sonic Echo / Impulse Response
- A system that can be used to determine the dimensions of buired concrete lelement and locate defects such as necking in piles.

Slab Impulse Response - A system for investigating the grade and sub-base support of slabs of finding delaminations.

Crosshole Sonic Logging and Crosshole Tomography - A system for the QA of bored pile and diaphragm walls which can be used to image defects or inclusions.

SASW - A system for anllysing the surface wave spectrum for multiple layered elements such as pavements.

MIRA Ultrasonic Pulse Echo Imaging System - The most advanced concrete imaging system on the market.

Corrosion

Corrosion of reinforcement the most costly forms of deterioration for concrete infrastructure. While it repair is highly expensive, sometimes costing more than the original structure, it can be prevented relatively cheaply with an effective inspection and maintenance program. The instruments listed here enable strategic inspection programmes to be undertaken to identify critical areas for corrosion protection. They can also be used to identify repair requirements if inspection has been left too long.

Monitor Existing Structures- Equipment for gaugeing the corrosion activity and rate using: half p[otentials, resistivity, linear polarisation resistance and galvanic pulse measurements.

Monitor New Structures - Instruments to measure the corrosion rate using corrosion current, galvnic pulse and linear polarisation resistance.  Includes equipment to give prediction of corrosion front ingress.

Concrete State

Three very import aspects of the concrete’s state are its temperature, humidity and degree of cracking. It is important to ensure temperature does not exceed certain limits during hydration or unacceptable cracking, deterioration and strength loss may result. Temperature is also one of the best ways of assessing maturity and hence insitu strength to enable early stripping and cessation of curing. Moisture measurement is vital in assessing laying of floor covering on concrete slabs. These logging temperature and humidity probes provide an efficient and labour saving means of measuring temperature.

Temperature - Equipment that measure temp and logs results in the same probe

Maturity - Logs temperature and calculates the maturity of concrete for insitu strength

IntelliRock Wireless and LIVE- Allows user to view IntelliRock temp and maturity data live on their PC, on the web or get Smartphone updates.

Humdity Meter- Compact Humidity Meter for measurement of RH in concrete slab before the application of coverings

Logging Humidity Sensors - Logging humidity probes to measure moisture content in floors before sealing with coating or vinyl

Crack Width - Various hand held magnifiers for measuring crack width

Crack Movement - Demec gauges and monitors for measuring crack movement

Strain Gauges - Variety of strain gauges and loggers for recording strain in concrete and reinforcement

General Testing

These instruments do not test the concrete but test some aspect of materials associated with the concrete or other materials

PaperSchmidt- Log the hardness of paper rolls for winding and printing applications

Screed Tester
- Measures the soundness of screeds

Coating Thickness - Measures thickness of concrete coatings

Joint Leak Detector - Vacuum chamber for testing sealed joints

Rock UCS - Hardness tester to give the strength of rocks
